About Gentlemen Broncos

Gentlemen Broncos (2009) is a delightfully eccentric comedy-fantasy from director Jared Hess, who brought us Napoleon Dynamite. The film follows Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano), a homeschooled teenager and aspiring science fiction writer who attends a fantasy writers' convention. There, his imaginative story 'Yeast Lords' catches the attention of his idol, the pompous and wildly successful novelist Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement in a scene-stealing performance). To Benjamin's horror, Chevalier steals his idea and publishes it as his own novel, 'The Bronco.'

The film brilliantly alternates between Benjamin's mundane reality and the fantastical visualizations of his story, which are brought to life with hilarious low-budget aesthetics. Sam Rockwell appears in dual roles as both the heroic protagonist and villain in these sequences, showcasing his comedic versatility. Hess creates a uniquely awkward world filled with memorable characters, from Benjamin's supportive but eccentric mother (Jennifer Coolidge) to his ambitious friend Tabatha (Halley Feiffer).

While the film's quirky humor won't appeal to everyone, those who appreciate offbeat comedies will find Gentlemen Broncos genuinely inventive. The performances are consistently strong, particularly Clement's gloriously pretentious author and Angarano's earnest protagonist. The film explores themes of creativity, plagiarism, and artistic integrity with both absurdity and heart. Watch Gentlemen Broncos for its imaginative storytelling, distinctive visual style, and genuinely funny take on the struggles of a young artist trying to protect his vision from exploitation.
